I have an interest in the history of my local area Middlesbrough and through my Then & Now photos try to document the changes to the architecture over the years by making video slideshows of my comparison photos in which I use an old photo and take a new photo from as close a position as i can to where the photographer of the original stood. I hope that these videos will remind older viewers of what the town looked like and at the same time show younger generations how the area has changed.

I've been planning this project for a long time and have managed to amass as many photos of the lost pubs as I could. Unfortunately I've not been able to find photos for all of the pubs and I haven't included the lost pubs of South Bank, Grangetown, Normanby or Eston because I've not included those areas in my Then & Now videos. Nonetheless I hope that you find this video an interesting reminde...

The Building Of Beck View Housing Estate, Middlesbrough
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
This is something a bit different to my other videos so might not be of interest to some people. This is a slideshow video showing the construction of the Beck View housing estate which was built on the site and playing field of St. Anthony's Secondary School on Cargo Fleet Lane. At the time where I lived I had a bird's eye view of the construction process and took photos at regular intervals. ...

They sound amazing the clock tower looks similar to the one at Manchester town hall
I think the design of both of them was influenced by Big Ben's clock tower
This is a tour video of the building.
Another good set again Stephen, whoever designed that monster over the Rail Station wants his head banging against a wall.
Thank you Alan 👍
would like to see more of Brambles farm estate, my father born there many moons ago before moving to Derbyshire (but always a peripatetic builder and so forever on the move until he finally went on the railway before passing in the nineteen nineties,), but have only ever seen this one picture, otherwise have to use my fancy and imagine him visiting some of these places.
Sorry David, but there aren't many "old" photos of Brambles Farm to be found for these Then & Now videos.
to think i used to live in one of the houses at 0:44, this is legit the first images ive seen of them. you've done a service in just reminding me of them, cheers mate.
You're welcome Valkree, I'm happy that you've got to see your house again 👍
Half off it, I do remember because I use to live in North ormesby , that's where I grow up, But didn't know about the chapel round the corner
Thank you for your time and effort into making theses... some of theses magnificent buildings should have NEVER BEEN DEMOLISHED........
You're most welcome Aidy, I agree these buildings could have been re-purposed but I'd guess that a lot of people made a lot of money out of the redevelopment of the town.
Bloody fantastic
Thanks Baz 👍
Sad times.😢 fabulous buildings been demolished. Great historical clips 👏
Same by ours boss pubs always packed out full of good lads closed down then pulled down by the council,so people can't socialise locally and are pushed towards the town centre for a bevvy.just a way of breaking up strong communities.
Is there any material for sale eg books etc. We left the Borough in 1981 so I would love to be able to purchase these things for my grandchildren.
Hi Jacqueline, I don't have any material for sale as I don't have copyright to any of the old photos that I use in my videos. There are some local authors like Araf Chohan who currently have books on Amazon. Also local historian Tosh Warwick also has books on Amazon. If you "search" either of their names in the book section on Amazon you will see quite few books.
Amazing mate! X
Thank you Jonathan 👍
Thank you for your awesome videos, i was born in Consett, lived in Billingham but went to St Marys College in Middlesbrough. when ever i get home i always have a drive to the transporter bridge as its an amazing sight.
You're most welcome Michael 👍
Thank you Stephen
You're welcome Stewart 👍
Thank you Stephen, all a long time ago.
You're welcome Stewart.
I love Middlesbrough me
Great work love all of it
Thanks David 👍
The tile work on the side of the Swedish mission church…..as soon as I saw the first photo I knew I recognised it. To see it’s still there and realise why I recognise it…..even though I could never imagine where I’ve seen it unless I was told. ❤
I remember as a kid the green tiles on the masham hotel. I was born in 1980 and I’m pretty sure when I was really little there would be people drinking there? Not sure when it closed? Can remember it turning into a shop of some kind, eventually a JD sports, not sure what it is now, but I always remember being glad that over the years whoever was in there kept the tiles. It’s basically my first memory of history being preserved.
3:44. Dovecote salerooms. Not in the Linthorpe road spot I remember as a kid. But they did the best whistling air bomb rockets around fireworks night, and they were only £1 for 10 if I remember correctly. They were made of plastic and the bang they gave off was 10x louder than a standard banger…..and they were £2 for 10. Pretty lucky none of lost a hand never mind a finger. What a blast from the past. ❤
To the maker of these videos. I don’t suppose you have any old photos of swans corner roundabout at the top of ormesby bank? Or the the houses where the yellow lines are painted on the dual carriageway coming back from guisborough? Or guisborough road Nunthorpe? Thanks for the content. ❤
Sorry I haven't come across any photos of Swans Corner.
Why is it so heart warming to see old pictures of places you know today? I so wish google street view had been invented 100 years ago. I’m paused only 17 seconds in, on a photo of Marton…..and instantly feel I recognise it. Even though the foreground buildings are gone now, the houses in the distance are still there if I’m not mistaken, and are between the Ruds arms and the church on Marton road? With the closest buildings being where the ruds is now albeit more set back. I have no idea why I love seeing these old pictures so much but I do.
Thank you so many memories from the late 70s and the pubs I’ve had a beer in great times for me.
You're most welcome Neal 👍
Brought tears to my eyes How middlesbrough has changed and lost alot of historic pubs and clubs .wow its heartbreaking. Once again beautiful video to keep those Middlesbrough memories alive .......UTB n god bless
Yes you couldn't have much of a pub crawl around the town centre these days 😥
@@BigMack1959 not at all mate .I grew up in pally park .had my 1st pint in a pub at the brambles farm pub.had my 1st pint on a my 1st night out at the mashem. Miss these pubs miss ayresomepark too UTB

Me mutha was Middlesbrough Welsh -Williams Like eh!
Absolute vandalism, pulling down the Stewart Park conservatory.
Very well managed with the video , shame the towns become such a bad place
Thank you Nigel, it is sad that the town has declined so much.
Rosses Borough Road is closing. This must be the oldest existing shop in our town Ant p
Yes Ant, I was sad to hear that, I'm nor sure when Rossses was established, I do know the Race furniture shop opened up in 1920 so maybe this is now the oldest in the town ? 🤔
@@BigMack1959 The article stated 1904
Thanks Ant.
As good as ever. Cheers Stephen.
Thank you Gary 👍
Another stirring video Stephen, always evoking memories. Keep the great work up !
Thank you Julie.
Brilliant as always!!
Thank you Jo.
Thank you 🙏
You're welcome 👍
Zetland rd not street ,sorry to be pedantic
A mea culpa moment.
It’s disgraceful the amount of iconic Victorian buildings in the town that have been demolished.
Post WW2 and especially in the 1950's & 1960's many town planners across the UK had little regard for Victorian & Edwardian architecture so they were replaced with concrete and chrome buildings to make their towns "modern". This modernisation backfired as these new buildings aged badly but a lot of folk made a lot of money during this time of modernisation.
@@BigMack1959 I came to Middlesbrough in 1977 and it was a beautiful busy vibrant town. Now the centre looks soulless and so empty. Town planners have ruined Middlesbrough
@@babettesfeast6347 I was born in Middlesbrough and have lived here most of my life and have watched amazing buildings like the Hugh Bell schools replaced by the concrete boxed law courts 😥
@@BigMack1959 and the big Royal Exchange building torn down for the ugly bypass. Imagine being able to see the town in its Victorian heyday.
@@babettesfeast6347 , sadly the Royal Exchange by that time was owned by British Steel and used as offices and by the late 1970's was in a very poor condition because of lack of maintenance by the past various owners as is the old ABC cinema at the moment. One of the reasons I make and post these videos is to give people an idea of what how Middlesbrough looked in it's heyday.
I wonder how many great pubs you can add to that list over the past 11 months? When Middlesbrough was Middlesbrough. How sad to see The state of the place now. Breaks my heart 😪
Some of those hotels and pubs were magnificent buildings, looked better than many a town hall, and to be demolished is heartbreaking, the one in Linthorpe that got bombed had been beautiful. And then theres the other end some right seedy dumps but popular none the less, l used to go to the Star And Garter met some nice girls there and some who weren't as nice lol. 66 years old nearly 67, we loved going down the Boro from our market town, it was like going to las vegas compared to our quiet little places, in one of our streets was a pub that was basically an old house with its two rooms made into a bar The Miners Arms, chock full tho, mostly old men in gaberdine macs, flat caps mufflers fingerless gloves, very much like Uncle Mort, tables covered in ash trays n glasses, Wills Whiffs cigars, pipes, Capstan Full Strength fags, Babycham bottles for the odd lady, Newcastle Brown ale bottle always with a half glass, Guiness was good for you ( not 10 pints tho as l found out at 16 especially with a few packets of peanuts, many a pebble dashing job l did lol ) Whitbread Big Head Trophy Bitter The Pint That Thinks Its A Quart, Double Maxim, Forest Brown, l personally loved Youngers Tartan beer a lovely tang to it, then we went all modern with Lager and lime touches. Tried American beer Colt 45 in cans was great but the draught stuff was horrible. Hardened drinkers in the lady departments supped Barley Wine powerful stuff some of my mates who were big boozers would drink a couple of pints of it filling their glasses from the little bottles could be expensive but they got drunk quicker, not for me tho l couldn't stand the smell or taste of it it tasted thick like a syrup it was so strong. Worthington & Bass, The first lager l tasted was Carling Black Label and its the only one l liked but that changed too, l gave up drinking 21,years ago partly due to a medical condition of Vertigo an inner ear problem that affected my balance, and l would get seriouly dizzy and ill so l had to stop, was surprised by how much l haven't missed it l was never as big a drinker as my best mates but l did like a few 5 or 6 pints over about 4 and a half hours just kept me right side of tipsy, anymore and id be sick and have long hangovers, now if im invited to weddings, birthdays etc l will have a few pints but I've not been to a celebration for about 10 years now. But l loved the pubs especially in boro it was always exciting to me, met a lot of girls who liked my accent even tho we were only from 9 miles away we are more Yorkshire than towny lol, they thought we sounded posh good grief 😂 Its sad how many realpubs have vanished its even sadder how many characters have vanished too, every pub had its own character or characters who could get people laughing and joking, hardly see any of the old gadgies we used to see real old men in grey or black suits with enormous ear lobes and huge conks red and pitted with pockmark holes, they had been in wars and national service and didnt give a fig about anything. All gone now, heaven knows what they would have made of all the nonesense about now thats taken seriously. Life changes but not for the better id say
I never see or hear mention of the marquis of granby, used to drink there in my younger days
A lot of these old pubs sadly are forgotten nowadays John that's why made this video.
The chimes sounded great and a mix up but good otherwise
Yes

No wonder this country has lost its moral compas... knocking down churches for car washes... despicable!!!
Amazing to see how bikes were left outside without any fear of them being nicked...how times have changed
A couple of things I notice in all of these great videos... 1. Beautiful old, solid buildings with character being replaced with flat, soleless concrete blocks. 2. Not many folk from the Windrush era and the likes of...
Great pubs all of them - brings back great memories- i think i must of been in almost 75% of them. I used to work on the door of a night club called the Marimba in 1961 which was terrific it got me a job in the oil industry and i ended up in Texas where i still am - the North Riding used to have lunchtime variety bandbox where if u got up and sang u got a free pint those were the good old days i feel sorry for the youngsters today stuck in their rooms with iphone for company
Great pics brings back loads of menories
Thanks Ian 👍
Worked there for 25 yrs at Reed Millican the glass merchants [latterly Elders Walker Millica Kings road, behind the Buckaneer [the buck!!] & Lortons Bookies on the corner. happy times alas long gone.
Parliament Road image speaks unholy volumes Ant p😢
A very different feel to the area as I knew it from the late '70's and early '80's 😥
Thanks Stephen and for all it's worth I'm still sharing your message with the taxi faring people of Teesside Ant p
You're welcome Ant and thank you for all your free promotion 👍
Impeccable photo matching. I wonder what these places look like in 2024?
Thanks Alison, I might go to selected places and take some up to date photos and show them as Then, Later & Now comparisons.
